Chang'an was the largest, best-organized and yet most complicated, rigidly planned and yet most culturally diverse city in the world in the seventh, eighth, and ninth centuries. Thomas Thilo's most recent book is a 685-page study of the society and culture of China's greatest city during the period of the Sui (581-617) and Tang (618-907) dynasties.
