Customers' perception of safety in the Sao Paulo metro system

As in many other big cities of the world, personal security is a serious concern for authorities, police, politicians and the population in general. Several strategies have been improved in order to overcome all forms of crime, from pickpocketing to more serious incidents. People are acutely aware of the risks of urban violence in Sao Paulo and therefore behave carefully, constantly checking their routine so as to reduce the risk of robbery and assault. However, when they get into the metro system, their behaviour completely alters and they relax. People feel safer in the metro than outside it The conditions that have led to this situation were created from the outset, and have been continuously fostered during the history of Sao Paulo Metro.
