Mobile Terminal Evolution and New Exciting Applications in Mobile Devices in UMTS 3G Networks

Third-generation mobile in the shape of UMTS with wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) as radio access technology is already a reality. With the first European network already live and an increasing number of commercial launches during 2003, UMTS offers business users and consumers an evolution of their current mobile experience to add video and other exciting new services. The marriage between telecommunications and the media industry, enabled by the Internet in particular, is now guiding us towards a desired convergence of data, speech and mobile networks. The architecture that will achieve the convergence is the Internet protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS); this will combine and enhance protocols to allow realtime services on top of the UMTS packet-switched domain. The UMTS terminal is the most visible network element of the UMTS system; however, it is just the top of the iceberg. In the coming years, there will also be a convergence in terminal functionality. The aim of this paper is to provide a short insight into the IMS and UMTS terminal architecture and those functionalities beyond these architectures, and to present the new exciting applications in mobile devices.
