LISLEX: Legal issues of concern to the library and information sector

The local Copyright Act is not the only legislation that affects copyright law in the countries within the European Union. European Commission Directives in the field have been issued, and will continue to be issued. The EC has an active and longstanding interest in copyright. It believes that anomalies in copyright law between Member States is inhibiting the development of the single market. It also believes that a strong intellectual property regime is necessary for the vision of an information society, as outlined in the Delors White Paper and the Bangemann Report, to come about. It also believes that European industry can compete more effectively in the world market with clear and unified copyright laws to assist the information industry to both sell its products abroad, and to offer its products to EU companies to make them more competitive.
