The original paper used a variant of the Muskingum-Cunge approximation to compute the propagation of flood waves. This discusser is of the opinion that the general validity of such routing has not yet been sufficiently critically examined, although it is known that the method shows significant extra diffusion in some problems. In his seminal paper (Cunge 1969, p. 227) Cunge wrote: "The attenuation obtained with this equation is not quite the same as the real thing..." This discussion examines where that is so, by comparing the propagation behavior of solutions for both the linearized advection-diffusion equation and the linearized Muskingum-Cunge equation. It shows how and when the latter becomes less accurate for streams with gentle slopes and more rapid variation of flow.
