摘要

The writers thank the discusser for the interest in the original paper and the time and effort taken to compose the discussion. Discussions with those who are familiar with the present state of matters in regards to the use of geosynthetics in combination with shallowly buried pipes and conduits are valuable. This closure provides the writers the opportunity to clarify a couple of issues. It would be difficult to overlook the importance of the work done by previous researchers. The reported data by these researchers was critical to the writers' understanding of both potential benefits and limitations of the use of geosynthetics with buried pipes. The writers' effort was to fill the gaps where there appeared to be a need for research and to provide new knowledge to the current understanding. Full-scale tests of a steel-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe afforded the writers the opportunity to investigate the effects of geosynthetic reinforcement on the pipe behavior.
