In the final chapters of the book, Hansen stretches beyond his core area of scientific expertise in proposing an "all hands on deck" approach to solve the climate problem: imposing steadily increasing fees on fossil-fuel carbon at its sources (mine, wellhead, or port of entry); denouncing cap-and-trade approaches in favor of tax-and-dividend systems; adopting agricultural and forest management practices rhat reverse carbon emissions from land-use changes, especially deforestation; pursuing efficiency measures and renewable energy sources; halting construction of coal plants; and rapidly phasing out coal as a source of fuel for electricity generation, relying instead on third- and fourth-generation nuclear power plants to satisfy increasing demands for energy in the United States and abroad.
