I am afraid that the title I chose for this lecture - The behavior of deposits - is neither very enlightening nor descriptive. It might refer to the activity of deposits, to variations in their magnitude for this country as a whole or geographically, or for an individual bank, or it might refer to secular or cyclical changes in deposits. This ambiguity was, I must confess, deliberate, as I thought that if I chose a sufficiently broad title, I could surely find something pertinent to discuss under it. As it is, I trust that the title will give me license to lead up to a discussion of the behavior of deposits from the viewpoint of an individual banker, which I appreciate is of major interest to you, by first discussing some of the functions and peculiar characteristics of banking which are mainly associated with deposits.
