Georgia: A Political History since Independence

To use a well-worn phrase: you wait for a book in English on the history of Georgia, then two come along at once. Donald Rayfield's recently published Edge of Empires: A History of Georgia (2012) takes a very broad view, covering a period from 1100 BC to the present. In contrast, the scope of the book reviewed here is much more modest-though its task no small achievement in itself-covering Georgia's emergence from Soviet rule in 1991 to the present day. Incidentally, this is the first of two books Jones is writing on the subject of Georgian independence; a separate volume looking at the short-lived Georgian Republic of 1918-1921 will follow shortly.
