The focus of this fascinating collection of essays is the novels and short stories which inhabit the ground between serious literature and 'Trivialliteratur' in Germany in the period under discussion. That the terms 'bestseller' and 'the late nineteenth century' are occasionally understood somewhat loosely in no way detracts from the aim of the contributors to examine the link between aesthetic purpose and market success in the work of well-known, less well-known and now almost forgotten authors who can be said to belong to the late nineteenth century either by date of birth or by publication of the work under discussion.
