Choosing to retire: how companies can support and respect the decision better

If a change in strategic direction mandates that an organization modify "the way we have always done it", a necessary concern becomes the individuals and teams who will, in effect, need to do it differently. A recent examination of strategy execution finds coordination to be one problem, with only 59 per cent of respondents to a major survey of managers saying that they can rely all or most of the time on colleagues in other departments. In responding to the same survey on the implementation of strategy (Sull et al., 2015), only 20 per cent of managers said that the organization effectively shifts people across units to adapt quickly enough to changing market conditions.
