Floundering in a deregulated market: an energy company seeks new strategies

The firm considered in this analysis, a subsidiary of a major energy company located in Alberta, provides electric utilities services to its customers. In the past, the electricity transmission and distribution operations were under the control of city municipality, but a corporate restructuring was considered necessary to provide the company with greater operating flexibility. Subsequently, the company was de-regulated from municipal control. Under this new corporate structure, the company re-designed its mission and vision. The mission of the company is to be a customer-driven, competitive and profitable company in the energy sector with a vision to be the first choice supplier for energy products.
