The tenacious impact of legacy power structures will undoubtedly continue to have a strong influence on both the composition and culture of the corporate workplace. There may well be as many reverses as gains in diversity even as the demographic logic of declining white birthrates wreaks inexorable changes in the US and European citizenry. Nonetheless, business organizations are not powerless to enact powerful and meaningful changes. They can be the leaders on this issue that they claim to be by paying attention not just to the diversity pipeline or the multiplicity of affinity groups they endorse but to all the subtle forces in day-to-day business operations that are, unwittingly, holding them back.
