Maintaining waterproofing continuity in watertight structures

This paper considers how designers can ensure continuity between different waterproofing systems when constructing below ground. There are hundreds of potential product combinations available, so it is important to consider their characteristics from the outset. In the opening sections the paperintroduces relevant industry standards and requirements, and defines the categories of waterproofing product available. The problem facing designers is in integrating these products into their building in a way that achieves a continual waterproofing barrier to protect the internal space. Additionally, the paper presents the typical defects that are characteristic of each product category, as well as other factors that must be taken into account during the construction process. Finally, by identifying the multitude of ways in which waterproofing continuity could be compromised, the paper provides designers with methods by which they can predict and navigate these pitfalls and deliver on the clients' requirements.
