摘要

Several years ago, at the closing session at the Access Services Conference in Atlanta, GA, a presentation was given by the circulation area at the Carol M. Newman Library, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA, about disaster planning for circulation/access services departments. Between 2007 and 2011, Virginia Tech experienced three tragedies; and during each tragedy, the access services staff at Newman Library jumped into action to ensure student safety to the best of their ability. Their calmness under such pressure was striking and memorable. Their presentation was a reminder that library workers, and access services workers, in particular, are resilient -something that is known but hardly discussed. The perseverance of librarians and libraries is the subject of Rebekkah Smith Aldrich's new book, Resilience.
