US armed forces, industry push procurement reform

Calling the timing ideal, the US military establishment is looking to push through wide-ranging defence acquisition reform early in US President George Bush's administration. Industry, armed forces and think-tank leaders believe the time is right for procurement reform. The new administration is intent on transforming the armed forces and there is a crisis of ageing equipment that must be replaced before spiralling maintenance costs force the US Department of Defense (DoD) to choose between modernisation and readiness and the steep price tags of new platforms.
