More US troops needed in Afghanistan, says CENTCOM chief

US Army General Joseph L Votel, the commander of US Central Command, has said he believes additional forces will be needed in Afghanistan to break the stalemate in the war against militant groups and preserve the gains made in the country. "I do believe it will involve additional forces to ensure that we can make the advice-and assist-mission more effective," Gen Votel said during a hearing of the US Senate Armed Services Committee on 9 March, adding that he and US Army General John W Nicholson Jr, the commander of the 'Resolute Support' mission in Afghanistan, are developing "advice and recommendations" for US defence secretary Jim Mattis on the way forward in Afghanistan.
