Defence expenditure by NATO's European allies edged up a bit in 2016, but still has a long way to go before reachingthe alliance's 2% of GDP defence-spending guideline, as revealed by statistics in its latest annual report, released on 13 March. "Our figures show that 23 allies increased their defence expenditure in real terms by 3.8%, adding up to USD10 billion," NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels. "So there has been progress."
