Hardline ethnic insurgents opposed to the Myanmar government's peace proposals have launched a fresh wave of attacks on security forces in the northeast of the country. The fighting has cast further doubt on the viability of a government-sponsored peace conference that is now planned for April after repeated postponements. The heaviest rebel attacks unfolded in the early hours of 6 March in Kokang: a region located in the northeastern corner of Myanmar's Shan State on the Chinese border.
