Under the objectives and guidance set out by the National Defence Strategy of 2008, Brazil's armed forces are required to make a significant contribution to peace and international security in order to secure a major role on the global stage and to advance the country's ambitions for a permanent seat on the United Nations (UN) Security Council. However, while the Brazilian armed forces are keen to undertake and fulfil those missions, the ambitious targets set by the political leadership do not match the availability of the resources and funding needed to achieve them.
