Spain has long been one of the largest supporters of windpower generation; in 2003 it was the second largest producer of wind energy in the world, accounting for 6,411MW. However, similar to the situation in Germany (the leading wind generator in the world) there is signs that its landscape is reaching its capacity for installed wind turbines. Plant developers in Spain have said it was far easier to get planning approval for wind projects five years ago than it is today. The newer projects in the country announced recently seem to be focused in the far southern and eastern regions.
