Computer-based energy management systems are continuing to evolve, but how much have they changed and what weapon are they in the battle to avoid potentially catastrophic blackouts? Whilst the reliability of large and complex power systems remains a challenge for power system engineers, utilities are facing the challenge of being able to ensure delivery of desired quality and reliability power to customers at the lowest cost in this competitive market. To keep the objectives at optimum levels, it is imperative to have advanced control system in place with advanced power system applications. Control system implementation strategies include deploying intelligent bay level protection devices, hardware and/or software bay control and interlocking components, Substation Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and grid level SCADA and Energy Management System (EMS) at the master control centres and load dispatch centers.
