A reliable power supply

Investment in new generating capacity needs to be supported by similar financial backing for the transmission grid. IPG looks forward to its conference on European power quality in Budapest in June. The 2003 blackouts that plagued many regions of the world have had some positive impact. They have forced the political and industrial focus to address the distinct lack of investment in grid networks, certainly compared to new generation capacity. Problems with power quality have arisen because many grid systems were not originally designed for the heavy demand and load profiles that exist today. Many new contracts for substation upgrades and transmission line projects are coming to the fore. In the privatised and deregulated world, transmission systems operators (TSOs) are also under pressure to sanction more repair, maintenance and upgrade work.
