Standing on a 10 hectare site on the Suffolk coast in the UK, Sizewell A nuclear power station has produced electricity since 1966. This twin reactor station typically supplies more than 10 million kWh of electricity a day. Operator British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) recently selected Team simoco to design, supply and install a replacement emergency radio communications system. The radio communications system at Sizewell A is dual-purpose: on a day-to-day basis it is used by the operations and maintenance teams and also the emergency system as required. The original system, installed approximately 15 years ago, was designed around a single, centrally-located base station, a set-up that resulted in two operating issues that the plant's management was keen to address.
