Goerlitz is Germany's eastern-most town, situated across the River Neisse from Poland. The large industrial manufacturing facility at Goerlitz has been in existence since 1847, and supplied its first steam engine for power generation in 1891. Acquired by Siemens PG in 1992, the site has been extensively modernised and is now the headquarters of the company's industrial turbines. In 2003, Siemens acquired Alstom's industrial turbine units. Merged with another Siemens purchase, Demag Delaval, the new entity runs under the name Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery (see sidebar). Since the Alstom purchase, concentration has focused on knowledge and technology transfer with regard to the industrial turbines.
