Indian power policy is heavily dominated by the country's 'pipeline diplomacy'. While increased investment in both the nuclear and hydro sectors is planned, the government intends to retain thermal plant as the basis of the generation mix. India's domestic coal sector will continue to supply a large proportion of feedstock, partly in order to maintain the level of employment that the mining sector provides, but despite new technology that allows the development of cleaner coal-fired plant, successive governments have struggled to promote the use of gas over the past decade.
