The basic design of gas engines is well understood, and there are limits to the cost-effectiveness of the improvements that can be made in terms of efficiency, reliability and cost. Inevitably, design modifications to enhance one area often have a negative effect on different areas. For example, improvements to efficiency often involve more complicated energy recovery systems, which in turn add to the cost of the engine.
