Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is an increasingly important technology for reducing atmospheric CO_2 emissions and mitigating ocean acidification. Pilot scale activitiesrnfor the deposition of CO_2 include depleted oil and gas reservoirs and saline formations, as well as the use of recovered CO_2 in enhanced oil and gas recovery (EOR). In these situations, CO_2 is depositedrnin a highly mobile gaseous or supercritical state. A number of countries have begun to explore adjacent shelf areas and continental margins as possible carbon storage sites. Effective carbon capture and storage however requires a zero tolerance policy for leakage at these potential sites.
