Commercial exploitation of energy from tidal waters relies on a range of logistic, technical and environmental challenges. Fundamentally, however, it depends on accurate, quantitative assessment of the available resource. The entire spectrum of marine conditions at a given site needs to be understood before developers, and importantly their investors, will commit to a site development. It is therefore paramount that accurate and reliable data is obtained over the longest possible time frame. To achieve this, expert knowledge and advice must be employed, not only in the choice of instrumentation but also in its deployment, recovery and ultimately in the analysis of the data.
