Milestones in Glass-Ceramics: A Personal Perspective

Because of the author's long association with Corning Incorporated and with the development of glass-ceramic products, this article will naturally concentrate on the history of commercial glass-ceramics with some bias to those of special interest to Corning. There are many landmark studies of nucleation and crystallization of glasses that have advanced glass-ceramic science but are omitted in this paper as they are not seen by the author, perhaps unwittingly, as directly linked to the products described herein. The portions of this paper which involve personal experiences of the author are written in the first person to separate them from the general history.
