Biometric Person Identification - Methods, Advances and Performance Evaluation

Biometric identification refers to identifying an individual based on his or her distinguishing physiological and/or behavioural characteristics. As these characteristics are distinctive to each person, biometric identification is more reliable and capable than the traditional knowledge based and token based techniques differentiating between an authorised person and a fraudulent impostor. Biometrics is an emerging topic in the field of Signal Processing. This paper discusses the advantages of the Biometrics over conventional recognition systems and the types of methods, which can be implemented using different biometric parameters.
