In a very general sense, an ad hoc network can be considered to be a collection of wireless mobile nodes that dynamically form a temporary network without the use of any existing network infrastructure. The resulting network is a nonhier-archical distributed structure. All nodes of the network act as routers and forward received packets to nodes within radio range. Ad hoc networks, by their nature, are highly adaptive systems that can come into existence on an as-needed basis. They can grow, reduce in size, fragment, and dismantle as desired. In this article, we focus on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). As such, we are interested in ad hoc nodes that are mobile and highly functioning.
