Violence Against Women Act Extended with Protections Against Loss of Housing Assistance

President Bush signed into law on January 5 an extension of the Violence Against Women Act (H.R. 3402, Pub.L. 109-162) that provides protection against the loss of housing assistance for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, or stalking. The bill also authorizes grants by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to combat violence against women in public and assisted housing and to develop long-term housing options for victims of violence who are currently, or at risk of becoming, homeless.
