Miami-Dade Housing Agency Subject to Investigation Over HOPE VI Revitalization Funds

The Miami-Dade, Fla., Housing Agency (MDHA) was under investigation by HUD and a local task force for possible mismanagement of development funds, including a $35 million HOPE VI grant for the Scott-Carver revitalization project in the Liberty City neighborhood. Mayor Carlos Alvarez of Miami-Dade County also requested a criminal investigation by the state attorney. The investigations were spurred by a series of news reports alleging that the MDHA had wasted millions of dollars on failed programs and pet projects and that developers didn't follow through on construction plans.
