Builders Urge Local Governments To Stop Imposing Requirements That Drive Up Housing Costs

Local governments must stop adding requirements that drive up costs and hamper the production of affordable housing, according to developers who spoke during an August 23 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) teleconference. NAHB also released statistics showing builder optimism about the multifamily rental market reached a new high in the second quarter of 2006 in light of rising occupancy rates and rents. At the same time, builders are more pessimistic about the outlook for the condominium market because of declining sales from record-high levels in 2005.
