Senate Committee Rejects CD Cuts, Adds Public Housing Funds in Marking Up HUD Appropriations Bill

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved its version of the fiscal 2007 HUD appropriations bill (H.R. 5576) July 20, rejecting a large cut for the community development block grant program proposed by the Administration, adding funds for public housing to the budget request, delaying the public housing operating fund asset management deadline for "stop-loss" PHAs by one year, and revising the Section 8 voucher renewal formula. The bill would also provide $100 million for HOPE VI public housing revitalization, a program the Administration wants to eliminate. The program would also be extended to September 30, 2007.
