On a December day in 1995, Fiat executive Giovanni Ra-zelli got some stunning news: He would be moving from the company's headquarters in Turin, Italy, to take over operations in faraway Brazil. Razelli, an engineer, was then head of Fiat's international operations, an illustrious post he had won after years of laboring in the company's design, production, and sales departments. A move from Fiat's power center to exile in the tropics was not part of his game plan. "It seemed like a step back in my career," he says.
