The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are emblazoned in the history of urban search-and-rescue operations in the United States. With massive damage to the Pentagon and the collapse of the World Trade Center, the presence of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's US&R task forces, working alongside their local counterparts, was critical to structural-collapse search-and-rescue operations in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.
