Better Safe Than Sorry

A matrix exists to place activities, incidents and operations into defined categories of risk. Those deserving the most attention are categorized as high-risk/low-frequency. We can put activities such as firefighting, technical rescue and hazmat here. Rightfully so, we spend a lot of time preparing and training for such events. The next area of risk that begs our attention concerns the events that can be categorized as high-risk/high-frequency. A great example of this is EMS and it is time that we change our thinking in regard to these types of calls. The term "complacency" can have a negative connotation, so let's use "comfortable" instead. We do so much EMS that we are comfortable with it. If you don't think so, just think back to that first EMS call and how you felt, and compare that to how you feel now.
