Specifically, the degree of expertise and professionalism required of fire department administrators has increased significantly over the years, a trend that is likely to continue. The fire chief now is the head of a service-delivery organization that is staffed with career employees, volunteers, or a combination of the two. Moreover, chiefs must work effectively within the community and with other officials, both appointed and elected.
