Silver Lake Fire District was in desperate need of a new main station for its volunteers. Their only option was to build on an adjacent wet site bounded by power lines, wetlands, a lake and apartments. A key design challenge was to fit a larger facility onto the site while respecting zon- ing setbacks, wetland and utility easements and existing stormwater management systems. The solution was to minimize the overall building footprint by designing the administration, training and bunking over the bays. Additionally, a comprehensive state-of-the-art storm drainage system was designed for the entire site.
