Business may be good at home, but that has not stopped the Norwegian maritime industries from eyeing up Asia-Pacific, by far the dominant region in shipbuilding. Just before the end of last year, Hoegh Autoliners signed a long-term strategic co-operation deal with Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), which includes the construction of four large pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) with further options. The co-operation provides for technology transfer and includes participation by the Oslo-based classification society Det Norske Veritas, NORAD (the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation) and Deltamarin, the Finnish consultant naval architect.
