Software safety solution for troubled tankers

Almeda, US-based Herbert Software Solutions (HSS) believes it already has an answer to a potential new requirement for tankers to have onboard damage stability software programs. Currently, all tankers on international voyages must meet the MARPOL requirements for damage stability. Two years ago several port states, led primarily by the UK's Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA), recognised that many tankers had onboard documentation to demonstrate compliance with these requirements only when the ships were loaded in accordance with the ship's standard loading conditions in the approved stability booklet. However, during actual operations as many as half of all tankers are loaded to conditions that differ significantly from these standard loading conditions.
