US-based Hyde Marine worked in conjunction with OptiMarin to develop and install five systems onboard cruise ships, a container carrier and a tanker in the period up to 2003. Since then it has embarked on a separate development programme and is now marketing its Hyde Guardian treatment system. As with the OptiMar system, destruction of organisms in the Hyde Guardian is achieved using medium-pressure UV, but the separation unit consists of a stacked disc filter with automatic back-flushing, which can be complemented by the addition of a Hyde Mud Remover dosing unit. Hyde Mud Remover is a liquid cationic polymer, which has been used on ships since the 1960s, It is considered to be non-hazardous and non-toxic.
