Keppel Singmarine made its initial foray into the oil and gas sector in August 2008 with the delivery of the first icebreaking vessel built in Asia, Toboy, to Russia's LUKOIL-Kaliningradmorneft. In early November, Keppel completed the second vessel, Varandey, for the Kalingrad-based subsidiary of the LUKOIL Oil Company, which is likely to have eyes on the rich resources of the Arctic Sea. Both vessels can cut through solid ice more than 1.7m thick and operate in the most extreme cold weather environments. The two vessels are built to the standards of, and classified by, the Russian Maritime Register. Their port of registry is Murmansk.
