There are plenty of current day navigators who are perfectly confident with using ECDIS, but equally there must be many more who have never had the opportunity to assess its merits. Some experienced navigators are of the opinion that getting to grips with what will soon be mandatory may be more difficult than those who have drawn up the regulations may realise. Harry Gale, technical manager at the Nautical Institute, a master mariner and class 1 pilot, described his experiences with ENC/ECDIS systems at the Navigation Conference & Exhibition, held jointly by the Royal Institute of Navigation and the International Loran Association in London recently.
