Iran is in the process of redeveloping its ship building and repair industry following the aftermath of revolution and an eight-year war. "Our shipbuilding industry has enjoyed growth in recent years and we have enjoyed great investment, but we are facing a lot of challenges," admitted a deputy with the official Ports & Maritime Organization (PMO). One important Iranian shipbuilder is SADRA, headquarted at Chahbahar on the Gulf of Oman and with another facility on the Caspian. It has come a long way since its foundation as a salvage company. Later, it became a breaking yard and it now specialises in building dredgers and other sophisticated vessels. In April it delivered a dredger to a domestic company and has won contracts for a variety of offshore structures and ships.
