Soil samples were obtained from a site contaminated with PCBs. PCB contamination is not uniform at the source of the Samples. Some may be present as isolated "hot spots." The Anaerobic phase of a two-stage bioremediation process was Evaluated. Populations of native organisms were very low. Species capable of dechlorination of PCBs did not proliferate Under anaerobic conditions in the laboratory. Reductive Dechlorination did not occur. In situ reductive dechlorna- Tion of heavily substituted PCB congeners is not likely to Make a useful contribution to elimination at the site repre- Sented by the soil samples.
