When 'green' is a red herring

The UK Prime Minister's much publicised desire to do something about "rip-off" Britain is set to be given a boost by a new Commission initiative to tackle the problem of the growing number of unregulated environmental claims being made by companies keen to exploit the popularity of green consumerism. Tina Garrity reports. Last year DG24 sent member states a questionnaire on environmental product claims, asking for information on how they regulated such claims. It also commissioned a study on present practices, the instruments available to control claims in each member state, the results achieved and any outstanding problems. It then set up an Expert Group on Green Claims to examine all of the results and suggest a possible way forward.
