Views from Bournemouth show a lively outlook

Congress 1999 promised great things, and, once the gremlins and technical glitches were surmounted, it delivered a good share of enlightenment and entertainment, as Deirdre Mason reveals. It was big, it was colourful, the delegates flocked to it and the reporting team was firing on all four cylinders (well, most of the time). New publications were launched and flagged up, and new CHGL electronic products had them queueing up at the stand to play on the computers. Yet, something was missing. Where were the ministers? Not one of the Blair line-up, so accommodating around the time of the Commission on Environmental Health's Agendas for change report, published in 1997, made it to Bournemouth to find out how the new public health was influencing the way the environmental health profession was working two years on.
